The law mandates that users must be given clear and comprehensive information about the use of cookies and other similar technologies, detailing what data is being collected and for what purpose. Websites must provide users with an easy way to accept or reject cookies, and they cannot assume consent from inactivity or pre-ticked boxes. This ensures users have genuine control over their personal data, enhancing their privacy rights in line with the broader data protection regime in the UK. WattsWeb include Cookie Consent within your hosting so you do not need to worry.
If a website in the UK operates without obtaining proper cookie consent, it risks non-compliance with the Privacy and Electronic Communications Regulations (PECR) and potentially the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). This non-compliance can lead to significant legal and financial consequences. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) is responsible for enforcing these regulations and has the authority to issue warnings, reprimands, and orders to bring processing activities into compliance. Moreover, serious breaches can result in substantial fines. Beyond financial penalties, non-compliance can also damage the reputation of a business, eroding trust with customers and potentially leading to a loss of business as users seek more compliant competitors. Adhering to cookie consent laws is crucial for maintaining legal compliance and fostering trust in the digital environment.
